5 Steps to set yourself apart in an Interview:

According to a Forbes article, 7 Things you probably didn’t know about your job search, on average, twenty-percent of job applicants get an interview. Among all those candidates, how do you set yourself apart? How do you create a lasting impact on the interviewer? There are many different tips and tricks that you can use to set yourself apart, but these are the five most important steps to take:

1. Carry yourself with confidence.

The interview process can be very stressful and overwhelming for candidates. It’s very important in an interview to carry yourself with confidence and just be yourself. Convey confidence with insightful questions and genuine conversation. Many candidates create an interview persona, however, the interviewer wants to see your true self. It’s imperative that you come off as authentic and genuine as possible. Be comfortable and confident in your own skin. Showcase that you’ve done your research and that you are the best candidate for that particular position. If you do your research on the company and job you will have an easier time feeling confident and being yourself.

2. Come with a plan.

Come to the interview prepared and with a plan. Show initiative and showcase that you can be a successful asset for that company. Have a plan on how you see yourself contributing to the company and what tools you can bring to the table. Have a few realistic goals in mind for yourself and how you plan on reaching those goals. This will show the company that you are goal minded and driven.

3. Be prepared to discuss areas of self-improvement.

There is no such thing as the perfect candidate as there is always room for improvement. It’s beneficial to be aware of areas you may need to improve or learn additional skills. Whatever that may be, find ways for growth in those areas. Be prepared to discuss those areas of improvement and how you plan on being better. Discuss how self-improvement will make you a better fit for the job.

4. Discuss activities outside of the workplace.

An interviewer loves to see that a candidate has interests outside of the workplace. Discuss things that showcase creativity and ingenuity. Show the interviewer that you have something that the other candidates do not—something that sets you apart. Whether that be a side business, personal website or even a YouTube channel. Showcase your creative side.

5. Exemplify your success with data.

It’s always a great idea to exemplify your success in the past with metrics and data. Whether it be something you did while in college or a past position, it’s important to have concrete facts about your success that showcase your experience. It will not only set you apart from others but also allow the company to compare your achievements to other candidates or employees.

It’s safe to assume you have competition for any position you interview for. Preparation for your interview is necessary if you want to stand out among other candidates.
